Side-By-Side: Gutter Helmet® Compared
to Gutter-Filter Style Gutter Protection
There are a lot of different types of gutter protection products available to the homeowner these days. Naturally, some styles work better than others. Today, let's take side-by-side look at two specific types of gutter protection systems, the Gutter Helmet system and the increasingly common gutter filter systems available on the market.
First, Let's Consider How Each Type Works...
The Gutter Helmet is a specially designed and shaped aluminum gutter cover that allows water to follow its natural curve right into the gutter, while sending leaves and debris safely away from the gutters. To many, this concept seems perplexing, but physics do prove that the natural surface tension of water enables the flowing roof runoff to perform ideally this way.
Gutter filter systems work quite a bit differently in the fact that they are actually fitted within the gutter itself. Although the actual material used in these filtration systems is much more durable and rigid, one way to think of these is like a sponge that fits inside the gutter—one that's designed to be porous enough to allow water to rapidly flow through while keeping debris out.
Gutter Helmet Systems
The professionally-installed Gutter Helmet system is made of long-lasting, very durable aluminum. Because of this, you can be reasonably well assured that the system will remain stable and functional for a very long time (easily an entire lifetime, for that matter).
Because of its design, even very small debris is washed away instead of accumulating or sitting on top of the gutter protection to break down over time. While custom-measuring and fitting will be necessary as part of the installation process, this precise fit also helps to make sure that the system does exactly what it is supposed to do.
Gutter Filter Systems
Many choose filters because they are generally available to the do-it-yourselfer. The problem with this lies in the fact that a very well-matched fit must be established for them to do their job correctly; inexperienced installers might not know the correct size to use or be able to achieve a tight, professional fit.
With gutter filters, very small debris can settle into the filters; at first, it will cleanly wash away with a good rainfall, but over time the built-in treatment to prevent organic growth erodes and the filter becomes clogged by mildew and other plant growth.
All in all, both of these types of gutter protection systems function exactly how they are designed to function. The difference is that over time, a gutter filter system will lose its effectiveness where as a Gutter Helmet will not.
