Like all other parts of your home’s exterior, gutters eventually get worn down and reach the point where repairs won’t be as practical. But how can you tell when you need to plan for new gutters and consider how much Gutter Helmet® cost per foot? In today’s post, Gutter Helmet® of Northern Minnesota shares the signs that you should start looking into getting new gutters.

gutter failure

1. Blistering, Bubbling, or Peeling Paint — Standard gutters are made with galvanized steel that come with factory coatings, or are painted after installation. While blistering, bubbling, or peeling paint are not, by themselves, indicators of worn-out gutters, they may indicate an underlying problem: the presence of moisture under the paint layer. If this is a persistent issue, corrosion may have already begun.

2. Rust Spots — Later stages of corrosion result in rust spots that are visible from the ground. Watch out for red-brown streaks running down the downspouts or siding, which are more visible on light-colored surfaces. If the gutters happen to be made of thicker gauge material and the corrosion has not punched a hole through it, then the corroded spots can be sanded, scraped, and repainted as a temporary measure. When replacing your gutters, consider corrosion-proof materials like copper and stainless steel.

3. Cracks — Standard galvanized steel gutters are durable, but they can form cracks when exposed to stress caused by moisture in the gutters. Accumulated leaves and debris, as well as standing water, would expand as moisture turns to ice. This would exert pressure on the gutter troughs and result in cracks. Standing water is preventable by making sure the gutters are properly aligned, while a good gutter protection system like Gutter Helmet® can help make sure the gutters are clear.

4. Loose Gutter Seams — Traditional gutter systems are built with 10-foot segments, which means there are seams and joints that may come apart due to exposure to outdoor conditions. It is possible to repair loose seams with new hangers, fasteners, and new caulk, but if the gutters are structurally compromised, these repairs are merely temporary solutions. Investing in seamless gutter systems can give you gutters with longer life spans and reliable performance over the years.
