Apart from the style and how well they were installed, the materials used to manufacture your gutters determine how well they hold up to various elements and conditions. Rain gutter guards expert, MR. FIX-IT™, talks about the five materials most commonly used for gutters.

Gutter Basics: 5 Most Common Gutter Materials

1. Aluminum

Aluminum is perhaps the most widely used material for gutters. Aluminum gutters are known to be lightweight and resistant to rust. They are also highly customizable as they come in various colors. You can even repaint them. Aluminum gutters are available in a wide range of gauges and thicknesses. They are the preferred material for seamless gutters.

2. Copper

Copper gutters are a favorite among those with historic or traditional homes, but they are also gaining popularity among homeowners with contemporary dwellings. They tend to develop a sheen over time, but you have the option to paint over them. Some homeowners choose to let them develop a patina, believing that the gloss adds to the appeal of the gutters. Note that copper gutters tend to be more expensive than gutters made of other materials.

3. Steel

Steel gutters are strong and can be painted. However, they tend to be heavier and can start rusting after 5 to 10 years.

4. Vinyl

Vinyl is lightweight and inexpensive, making it ideal for DIY projects. While it’s easily available, vinyl cannot withstand severe cold and may crack when exposed to such conditions. You also won’t have a lot of colors to choose from, making it a bit more difficult to match their color with the rest of your home’s exterior.

5. Zinc

Like copper, zinc tends to be more expensive and is commonly used on high-end or historic residences. Zinc gutters are resistant to rust. There’s no need to paint them. You will, however, need to call in the professionals when installing zinc gutters as their seams and joints need to be welded.

No matter the material, it’s in your best interest to keep your gutters well-maintained. One way to do just that is to install rain gutter guards.  As a Gutter Helmet® dealer, MR.
