Planting trees and shrubs is one of the best activities you can do this spring. In doing so, you give your outdoors a great deal of curb appeal. With these standing around your home, you also get to achieve privacy, masking sights and sounds from next door as if they are insect screens on your window.
Read on as Gutter Helmet® of Western North Carolina, your local provider of rain gutter guard products in the area, shares the following tips for planting trees and shrubs around your home.
Do’s to Remember
In picking a tree, be sure that it is of the right size for your planting site. More importantly, it should be in scale with your home and with your yard. For instance, a large tree that is more than 70-feet-tall works well with a two-story home.
Depending on the size of the tree, the distance of the planting spot to your home must also be considered. The large tree must be at least 20 feet away from the home, while a smaller one must be 8 to 10 feet away. That way, you prevent the tree’s roots from encroaching underneath your home, affecting the foundations.
Don’ts to Remember
In picking a tree, don’t choose those that create a lot of litter, like trees that shed seed pods or drop fruits that splatter upon hitting the ground. Also, never plant trees close to the home that can pose such hazards like breaking limbs during strong winds.
Should the limbs of trees begin to extend and hang above the roof, take the time to trim them. They can drop leaves or pine needles, which can then clog the gutter or damage the roofing material. Rodents may also use these branches as access to the top of your roof where they can set up their breeding grounds.
